Oamaru firefighters quickly put out a fire in vegetation close to railway tracks near Waterfront Rd, South Hill, yesterday afternoon, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said.

The Oamaru fire, in a 40sq m area of vegetation, had been started by a passing steam train.

Frefighters were alerted at 3.47pm, the spokeswoman said and were helped with the use of a water tanker from Weston.
